THE MONUMENT IN „DEALUL FURCILOR”
On the 28 February 1785, Horea and Closca were executed by the breaking wheel in the presence of a group of people forcibly brought from 419 localities (three young men and three elders from each place) that had been involved in the uprising from the late autumn of 1784. It was one of the cruellest punishments designated by law.
The decision to build this monument was taken in 1926 – a fact marked on the marble base – 11 years before the unveiling of the Obelisk of Horea, Cloşca and Crişan, which immediately became the most representative monument related to the execution of the leaders of the uprising (1784).
The location of this small obelisk (4 m high) on the Forks Hill is closer to the actual place of execution, although it’s not very close either. It was, in fact, the execution site of the city which appears under the name „Galgen berg” (Forks Hill) on the 18-th century city maps, being also marked as a Gallows Hill. Its actual location was on the other side of the Forks Hill, southward, closer to the current Partoş neighborhood. But, at the time of the inauguration, the above information about the obelisk was not known and the former execution site was assumed to be closer to the current place.
The „Horea, Closca and Crişan” monument has a short, marble-clad base, surrounded by pillars bound by chains and metal balls. An inscription paying tribute to the leaders of the uprising was made in 1959 when the old „Michael the Brave” High School took the name „Horea, Closca and Crisan”. A restoration of the monument took place in 1974.

The decision to build this monument was taken in 1926, the year carved on its marble base. The small obelisk recalls the execution of Horea and Cloşca, which occurred in Alba Iulia on 28 February 1785.
The placement of the monument in the Dealul Furcilor area was not a coincidence. Its location was thought to be the place of execution for the leaders of the 1784-1785 Revolt. The city’s original execution site was in fact on the other side of the hill, closer to the present Partoş district. This information was not known at the time of the monument’s inauguration.
The four metre obelisk has a short marble clad base, which is bordered by pillars bound by chains and metal balls. An inscription of tribute to the leaders of the Revolt was made in 1959, when Michael the Brave High School took the name Horea, Cloșca and Crişan.
